Why Don’t Wild Animals Make Good Pets?

At Austin Wildlife Rescue, we receive many questions about whether or not a wild animal can be kept as a pet. Here are some of those questions and the reasons why this is NOT a good idea.

1. They are born to be wild.

Baby birds and animals are cute, but they grow up to be wild and they can be very dangerous.

2. They can make you or your pets sick.

Wild animals may have diseases that you or your pets can catch, which can make you very sick or even kill you. Rabies and distemper are two very good examples.

3. IT IS ILLEGAL!

State and federal laws protect almost all birds, mammals, and some reptiles. This means that you must have a rehabilitation license to have these animals in your possession.

4. They have very special needs.

Wild babies cannot beat the same foods that you or your pets eat. They have special dietary requirements and must be fed very often. Some feeding schedules require feeding as often as every 30 minutes throughout the day and NIGHT.

5. They need to be with their own kind.

Baby wild animals that are raised around people will no know what kind of creature they are. When the animal is finally release, it will probably die because it does not know how to live in the wild.

6. They are unhappy as pets.

Wild baby animals should not be kept in cages and forced to live as pets. Often, they will become stressed and die. They need to be free and able to live with others like themselves.

7. WILD CREATURES HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE WILD.
